These days, a balance between work and your personal life can seem like an impossible task. Fears of losing your job incentivize longer hours. This leads to many working professionals to work more than 50 hours per week, and some to work more than 65 hours per week! And experts agree: the compounding stress from the never-ending workday is damaging to nearly every aspect of your life. It hurts relationships, health, and your happiness. Here are a few tips on how you can balance your work and personal life.

  1. Unplug

Technology has helped our lives in more ways than we can imagine. But it has also created an adverse side-effect: we are always connected. Emails and work notifications inject an undercurrent of stress into your relaxation time–thus you are never able to wind down. Turn off notifications for certain apps, or even shut off your phone for a few hours every day to enjoy your time with family and loved ones.

  1. Exercise

Exercise may be the best stress-reducer we can offer our bodies. It forces your body to create and pump endorphins and help lift your mood. Exercising at least 3 to 4 times a week for 30 to 60 minutes can have a positive effect on your stress.

  1. Make a Big Change

The biggest source of your unhappiness and stress may be your job, and only your job. You have gone from being a big fish in a little pond to being a very little fish in a tremendously deep, stress-filled pond. Consider a lower position or a new job in which the stresses are not affecting you so negatively.
